“Talking with Tehran,” an event hosted by the World Affairs Council-DC   was extremely helpful in understanding the situation that is occurring right now between Iran and the United States. The event had three speakers and one moderator. They were Dr. Trita Parsi, Dr. Robert Litwak, and Ms. Barbara Slavin and the moderator was Ambassador John Limbert. (more…)

Foreign Policy Series: Trade and Free Trade Agreements – November 13, 2007

The Foreign Policy Series event on Tuesday, 13 November featured The Honorable David Lemor, Senior Advisor to the Free Trade Agreement with the United States for the government of Peru and Executive Director of Peruvian government’s investment agency, and The Honorable Alexander Watson, Director of Hills & Company and a former Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs. Unfortunately, His Excellency Camilo Alfonso Ospina Bernal, Ambassador of Colombia, had complications with his schedule and could not be present.  The event was part of a four part series about the Organization of American States (OAS), which will focus on trade, immigration, energy, and democracy. This event highlighted the series’ concentration on trade and free trade agreements. (more…)

In Pakistan in 2004 the scientist A.Q. Khan appeared on television, and claimed sole responsibility for the Pakistani nuclear trade. Khan was prior to this a national hero in Pakistan, for his efforts in making Pakistan into a nuclear power. With close friends both in the military and among the political elites, he was well integrated in the government. The scientists he worked with actually all believed that the Pakistani government was running both the nuclear program and the nuclear trade.

Embassy Series: South Africa, Hosted by Ambassador of South Africa Walile Nhlapo – November 7, 2007

Members of the World Affairs Council alighted upon the South African embassy on 7 November for an evening of conversation and debate with Ambassador Walile Nhlapo. Eager guests quickly filled the lecture room, sipping red wine and chatting with neighbors. The ambassador spoke authoritatively on issues pressing South Africa, with special emphasis on foreign relations between South Africa and the United States. Afterwards, the ambassador volleyed queries in an extensive question and answer session before adjourning the guests to the buffet. As always, members engaged themselves in heated debate about matters of South African foreign policy and the future of the state in an increasingly multilateral world. (more…)
