Summer 2012

Applicants are no longer being considered for Spring 2012. Applications for Summer 2012 will be accepted on a rolling basis. The review process will begin on April 2, 2012.


The World Affairs Council - Washington DC is looking for capable, self motivated, and goal oriented university and graduate students with an interest in global education and international affairs to participate in its Intern Leadership Program. The Council's internship program offers a unique opportunity to be involved in the programming and management of a nonprofit organization that is ‘A Leading Forum for Global Education and International Affairs’ and an institution ‘Where Learning Happens.’  Interning at the World Affairs Council provides students with the opportunity get hands on involvement with the professional staff, distinguished Board, and friends of the organization.  As a WAC-DC Intern, students gain access to prominent education and foreign policy experts from academia, government, business, NGOs, and the press/media.

The World Affairs Council hires a team of interns for each semester to work together towards its mission.  Each position requires a unique set of individual skills, which must translate and contribute to a positive learning process and defined results. 


International Affairs Interns (3)

  • Work with the International Affairs Director and International Programs Committee to advance the short and long term global programs strategy
  • Research and identify potential programs, speakers, and agendas for public events
  • Prepare and staff WAC-DC’s International Affairs programming and special events
  • Write briefs for all Council events for electronic publication and membership mailings
  • Assist staff with membership management through promotional outreach initiatives
  • Other research and writing as assigned


Qualifications:
Pursuing degree (BA/MA) in relevant field; background or strong interest in international affairs; excellent written and oral communications skills; strong computer skills; ability to commit 30 hours per week including 4-6 evening and weekend events per month.

Global Education Interns (3)

  • Work with the Global Education Director, Global Education Committee, and other Board representatives to help advance the short and long term global education program strategy and goals
  • Assist the work and development of the Global Education Committee and Global Education Advisory Committee
  • Research, identify, and help deliver programs, speakers, and priorities for Global Education events
  • Assist with research and writing of grant proposals targeted to Global Education objectives
  • Help to write, prepare, and edit the Global Education E-Newsletter
  • Work as the liaison to student participants in the ongoing Students Leadership Academy programs
  • Assist in developing learning objectives and identifying social studies standards for all Global Education programs
  • Develop and standardize online resources for students and teachers.

Qualifications: Pursuing a Master’s degree in education; background or strong interest in international affairs and global education preferred; excellent written and oral communications skills; strong computer skills; ability to commit 30 hours per week and occasional weekends (for programs)

Global Communications and Marketing Interns (1)

  • Work with International Affairs Director, Global Communications Committee, and Board representatives on organizational communications, cause marketing, and development priorities.
  • Help to maintain and expand use of new and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, web site, etc) to promote the mission priorities
  • Advance the relationships with press/media contacts in the Washington ADI
  • Coordinate press/media coverage of WAC-DC events
  • Design promotional material for WAC-DC events
  • Other research and writing as assigned

Qualifications: Pursuing degree (BA/MA) in communications/marketing/journalism or related field; a demonstrated knowledge of the position responsibilities; strong interest in international affairs and/or global educations; ability to commit 30 hours per week including 4-6 evening and weekend events per month.

Volunteer Openings

The World Affairs Council-Washington, DC is always looking for responsible, dependable individuals to assist in the operation of its public program events.  Volunteers will collaborate with staff and interns to promote the smooth functioning of events by supporting set-up and registering attendees, taking photos or writing a blog about the event, and takedown afterwards.  Events are mostly in the evenings during the week day, though a possibility exists for working in the office during the day, usually with preparations for large upcoming events.  If interested please e-mail Stephanie Fassler at sfassler@worldaffairsdc.org and attach your resume.
