Leadership Academy on International Affairs

The World Affairs Council – Washington, DC will host its 8th annual Leadership Academy on International Affairs in summer of 2019. At the Leadership Academy, students participate in simulations and hear from experts from many fields in international affairs. The Leadership Academy centers on globalization and how the world works in the 21st century and covers topics such as trade, human rights, peace and conflict, and the environment. Additionally, students will get to hear from professionals who can help guide them towards a career in a vast array of fields.

In previous years, students have heard from journalists, diplomats, and academics. Topics covered include:

“Global Diplomacy and Careers in the Foreign Service” with Ambassador Lino Gutiérrez

“Women’s Rights are Human Rights: Understanding Gender in Iran” with Yeganeh Rezaian, formerly of Bloomberg News and The National

“Human Trafficking and Supply Chains” with Annick Febrey of the Human Trafficking Institute

“Global Implications of Climate Change” with Anthony Peters of the Student Conservation Association

Students in the past have also had the unique opportunity to go on field trips to embassies and government offices. In 2018, students went to the US Department of State to participate in their “Global Counterfeit Trade Simulation” where they practiced public speaking, negotiation, and diplomacy.
